Tie Rod Replacement (Complete)






^ Tools Required
- J 42188 Ball Joint Separator
- Or Equivalent

Removal Procedure
1. Raise and support the vehicle.
2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
3. Disconnect the outer tie rod end from the suspension knuckle. Refer to Rear Axle Tie Rod (Outer End).
4. Remove the nut retaining the rear axle tie rod to the crossmember.
5. Remove the rear axle tie rod from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure
1. Install the outer tie rod end into the tie rod.
2. Install the tie rod into the crossmember.
- Tighten the tie rod nut to the crossmember to 80 Nm (59 lb ft).

Notice: Always use the correct fastener In the proper location. When you replace a fastener, use ONLY the exact part number for that application. The manufacturer will call out those fasteners that require a replacement after removal. The manufacturer will also call out the fasteners that require thread lockers or thread sealant. UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED, do not use supplemental coatings (paints, greases, or other corrosion Inhibitors) on threaded fasteners or fastener joint interfaces. Generally, such coatings adversely affect the fastener torque and joint clamping force, and may damage the fastener. When you install fasteners, use the correct tightening sequence and specifications. Following these instructions can help you avoid damage to parts and system.

3. Install the outer tie rod end into the steering knuckle.
Tighten
a. Tighten the outer tie rod end nut to 20 Nm (15 lb ft) to seat the tie rod stud.
b. Turn the nut an additional 2 1/2 flats.
c. Check the outer tie rod end nut for a minimum torque of 30 Nm (22 lb ft).
4. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
5. Lower the vehicle.
6. Adjust the rear wheel toe as necessary. Refer to Toe Adjustment (Rear) in Wheel Alignment.
