Inner Tie Rod Replacement

Removal Procedure
1. Remove the steering gear (1) from the vehicle. Refer to Steering Gear.
2. Remove the rack and pinion boot and breather tube. Refer to Steering Gear.





3. Remove the shock dampener (3) from the inner tie rod assembly by sliding the shock dampener back on the rack.
4. Remove the inner tie rod assembly from the rack assembly as follows:
a. Place a wrench on the flats of the rack assembly (4).
b. Place another wrench on the flats on the inner tie rod housing (5).
c. Rotate the inner tie rod housing counterclockwise until the inner tie rod (2) separates from the rack.






5. Remove the Old Loctite from the threads of the rack and from the inner tie rod.





Installation Procedure
1. Install the shock dampener (3) onto the rack.

Important: Clean the threads prior to Loctite application. Check the expiration date on the Loctite (or equivalent) container. Do not use too much Loctite (or equivalent). Use only enough to evenly coat the threads.

2. Apply Loctite (or equivalent) onto the threads of the inner tie rod (2).
3. Install the inner tie rod (2) on the rack as follows:
- Place a wrench on the flats of the rack assembly (4).
- Place another wrench on the flats of the inner tie rod housing (5).
- Tighten the inner tie rod (2) to 100 Nm (74 ft. lbs.).

Notice: Always use the correct fastener In the proper location. When you replace a fastener, use ONLY the exact part number for that application. The manufacturer will call out those fasteners that require a replacement after removal. The manufacturer will also call out the fasteners that require thread lockers or thread sealant. UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED, do not use supplemental coatings (paints, greases, or other corrosion Inhibitors) on threaded fasteners or fastener joint interfaces. Generally, such coatings adversely affect the fastener torque and joint clamping force, and may damage the fastener. When you install fasteners, use the correct tightening sequence and specifications. Following these instructions can help you avoid damage to parts and systems.

4. Slide the shock dampener (3) over the inner tie rod housing until it engages.
5. Install the rack & pinion boot and breather tube. Refer to Steering Gear.
6. Install the steering gear to the vehicle. Refer to Steering Gear.
