Power Steering Gear Replacement

Removal Procedure
Caution Disconnect the negative battery cable under the following circumstances:
- When installing an electrical unit.
- When a tool or equipment could easily come into contact with "live" exposed electrical terminals.
Failure to disconnect the negative battery terminal may result in personal injury or damage to the vehicle's components. Turn OFF the vehicle ignition, unless instructed otherwise.
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Place a drain pan under the vehicle and the drain fluid.
3. Remove the intermediate shaft shield.
4. Disconnect the power steering pump inlet hose (2) from the power steering gear.
5. Disconnect the power steering cooler from the gear.
6. Remove the power steering cooler from the vehicle.
7. Disconnect the lower steering coupling from the power steering gear.
8. Raise and suitably support the vehicle.
9. Remove the tire and wheel assemblies.
10. Disconnect both outer tie rods from the steering knuckles. Refer to Outer Tie Rod End. Tie Rod
11. Disconnect the electrical connector for MAGNASTEER.
12. Disconnect both of the stabilizer bar links from the lower control arms. Stabilizer Link
13. Remove the stabilizer bar from the crossmember.
14. Remove the steering gear mounting bolts and nuts.
15. Remove the power steering gear from the vehicle through the left wheelhouse opening.
Installation Procedure
1. Install the power steering gear into the vehicle through the left wheelhouse opening.
2. Install the power steering gear mounting bolts and nuts.
- Tighten the steering gear mounting nuts to 100 Nm (74 ft. lbs.).
Notice: Always use the correct fastener In the proper location. When you replace a fastener, use ONLY the exact part number for that application. The manufacturer will call out those fasteners that require a replacement after removal. The manufacturer will also call out the fasteners that require thread lockers or thread sealant. UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED, do not use supplemental coatings (paints, greases, or other corrosion Inhibitors) on threaded fasteners or fastener joint interfaces. Generally, such coatings adversely affect the fastener torque and joint clamping force, and may damage the fastener. When you install fasteners, use the correct tightening sequence and specifications. Following these instructions can help you avoid damage to parts and systems.
3. Install the stabilizer bar onto the crossmember.
4. Connect both of the stabilizer bar links onto the lower control arms. Stabilizer Link
5. Connect both outer tie rods to the knuckles. Refer to Outer Tie Rod End.
- Tighten the outer tie rod nut to the knuckle to 45 Nm (33 ft. lbs.).
6. Connect the lower steering coupling onto the power steering gear. Steering Column
7. Connect the electrical connector for MAGNASTEER.
8. Install the power steering cooler onto the crossmember.
9. Connect the power steering cooler to the power steering gear.
- Tighten the power steering cooler fitting to the power steering gear to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.).
10. Connect the power steering gear inlet hose (2) to the power steering gear.
- Hold the hose against the steering gear while tightening the fitting.
- Tighten the power steering gear inlet hose fitting to the power steering gear to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.).
11. Install the intermediate shaft shield onto the shaft yoke.
- Tighten the intermediate shaft shield clamp to 3.5 Nm (32 inch lbs.).
12. Install the tire and wheel assemblies.
13. Lower the vehicle.
14. Connect the negative battery cable.

15. Remove the drain pan, refill the power steering fluid reservoir, and bleed the power steering system. Refer to Bleeding Power Steering System. Service and Repair
16. Check and adjust the front wheel toe setting. Refer to Toe Adjustment (Front) in Alignment.
