Steering Column Shrouds

Removal Procedure
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Caution Disconnect the negative battery cable under the following circumstances:
- When installing an electrical unit.
- When a tool or equipment could easily come into contact with "live" exposed electrical terminals.
Failure to disconnect the negative battery terminal may result in personal injury or damage to the vehicle's components. Turn OFF the vehicle ignition, unless instructed otherwise.
2. Disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in AIR BAGS AND SEAT BELTS.
3. Remove the steering column from the vehicle. Refer to Steering Column Replacement.
4. Secure the steering column to the modular column holding fixture J 41352.
5. Place the holding fixture into the vise.
6. Inspect the steering shaft assembly for accidental damage.
7. Remove the tilt the lever. Refer to Tilt Wheel Lever.
8. Remove the two pan head tapping screws from the lower shroud.
9. Perform the following steps to remove the lower shroud:
a. Tilt the shroud down.
b. Slide the shroud back to disengage.
10. Remove the torx head screw from the upper shroud.
11. Remove the upper shroud.
Installation Procedure
1. Install the upper shroud.
2. Use the torx head screws to secure the upper shroud.
- Tighten the screw to 1.4 Nm (12 lb in).
Notice: Always use the correct fastener In the proper location. When you replace a fastener, use ONLY the exact part number for that application. The manufacturer will call out those fasteners that require a replacement after removal. The manufacturer will also call out the fasteners that require thread lockers or thread sealant. UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED, do not use supplemental coatings (paints, greases, or other corrosion Inhibitors) on threaded fasteners or fastener joint interfaces. Generally, such coatings adversely affect the fastener torque and joint clamping force, and may damage the fastener. When you install fasteners, use the correct tightening sequence and specifications. Following these instructions can help you avoid damage to parts and system.
3. Perform the following steps to install the lower shroud:
a. Check that the slots on the lower shroud engage with the tabs on the upper shroud.
b. Tilt the lower shroud up and snap the shrouds together.
4. Install the two pan head tapping screws to the lower shroud.
- Tighten the screws to 6.0 Nm (53 lb in).
5. Install the tilt lever. Refer to Tilt Wheel Lever.
6. Install the steering column to the vehicle. Refer to Steering Column Replacement.
7. Enable the SIR system once all the service operations are completed. Refer to Enabling the SIR System in AIR BAGS AND SEAT BELTS.
8. Connect the negative battery cable.
