Steering Column - Removal and Installation

Removal Procedure

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

Caution Disconnect the negative battery cable under the following circumstances:
- When installing an electrical unit.
- When a tool or equipment could easily come into contact with "live" exposed electrical terminals.
Failure to disconnect the negative battery terminal may result in personal injury or damage to the vehicle's components. Turn OFF the vehicle ignition, unless instructed otherwise.

2. Remove the inflator module from the steering wheel. Refer to Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (Driver Inflator Module). Steering Wheel
3. Remove the steering wheel from the steering column. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement.
4. Remove the tilt wheel lever from the steering column. Refer to Tilt Wheel Lever. Service and Repair
5. Turn the steering wheel far enough to the left to gain access to the upper coupling bolt.
6. Remove the upper coupling bolt.

7. Turn the steering wheel back to the right until the wheels are in a straight ahead position and lock the steering column.
8. Remove the driver's side knee bolster trim panel. Refer Instrument Panel, Gauges and Warning Indicators.
9. Remove the driver's side knee bolster. Refer Instrument Panel, Gauges and Warning Indicators.
10. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the column.
11. Remove the nuts from lower steering column support plate.

12. Remove the upper steering column bracket nuts from the upper reinforcement assembly (3).
13. Slide the steering column (2) off of the intermediate shaft.
14. Remove the steering column (2) from the vehicle.
Rotate the steering column clockwise as the bottom of the steering column reaches the reinforcement assembly. This will allow the Steering Wheel Position sensor room to clear the instrument panel brace.

Installation Procedure

1. Position the steering column assembly (2) into the vehicle and insert the lower steering shaft assembly into the upper coupling of the intermediate shaft.
2. Install the cross car locating bushing (1) on the right hand mounting stud.
3. Install the upper steering column bracket nuts to the upper reinforcement assembly (3).
- Tighten the upper steering column bracket nuts to 24 Nm (17 lb ft).

Notice: Always use the correct fastener In the proper location. When you replace a fastener, use ONLY the exact part number for that application. The manufacturer will call out those fasteners that require a replacement after removal. The manufacturer will also call out the fasteners that require thread lockers or thread sealant. UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED, do not use supplemental coatings (paints, greases, or other corrosion Inhibitors) on threaded fasteners or fastener joint interfaces. Generally, such coatings adversely affect the fastener torque and joint clamping force, and may damage the fastener. When you install fasteners, use the correct tightening sequence and specifications. Following these instructions can help you avoid damage to parts and systems.

4. Install the lower steering column support plate (1) nuts.
- Tighten the lower steering column support plate nuts to 24 Nm (17 lb ft).

5. Turn steering column far enough to the left to gain access to the upper coupling of the intermediate shaft.
6. Install the upper coupling bolt.
- Tighten the upper coupling bolt to 47.5 Nm (35 lb ft).
7. Connect all the electrical connectors (except SIR) to the column.
8. Install the drivers side knee bolster. Refer Instrument Panel, Gauges and Warning Indicators.
9. Install the drivers side knee bolster trim panel. Refer Instrument Panel, Gauges and Warning Indicators.

Important: Do not over torque steering wheel set nut. Over torquing the set nut will cause the steering wheel to rub on the SIR coil and may damage the coil.

10. Install the tilt wheel lever Refer to Tilt Wheel Lever. Service and Repair
11. Install the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement.
- Tighten the steering wheel set nut to 41 Nm (30 lb ft).
12. Install the inflator module. Refer to Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (Driver Inflator Module). Steering Wheel
13. Connect the negative battery cable.
14. Perform SIR Diagnostic System Check. Refer to SIR Diagnostic System Check in AIR BAGS AND SEAT BELTS.
