Lower Steering Shaft Assembly - Off Vehicle

- J 21854-01 Pivot Pin Remover
- J 41352 Modular Column Holding Fixture
- Or Equivalents


Removal Procedure
1. Remove the lower and upper shrouds. Refer to Steering Column Shrouds.





2. Remove the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly.
3. Remove the tilt spring. Refer to Tilt Spring.





4. Remove the steering wheel position sensor. Refer to Steering Wheel Position Sensor





5. Remove the adapter and bearing assembly from the jacket assembly.





6. Use tool J 21854-01 to remove the two pivot pins.





7. Perform the following steps to remove the steering column tilt head assembly with the steering shaft assembly:
a. Mark the race and upper shaft assembly and mark the lower steering shaft to ensure proper assembly. Failure to assemble properly will cause steering wheel to be turned 180 degrees.
b. Install and pull the tilt arm to disengage the steering wheel lock shoes from the dowel pins in the steering column support assembly.





Disassembly Procedure
1. Remove the lower steering shaft assembly from the race and upper shaft assembly and the steering column tilt head assembly.





2. Perform the following steps to remove the race and upper shaft assembly from the lower steering shaft assembly:
a. Tilt 90 degrees to each other.
b. Disengage.
3. Perform the following steps to remove the centering sphere from the upper shaft assembly:
a. Rotate the sphere 90 degrees.
b. Slip the sphere out of the upper shaft assembly.
4. Remove the shaft preload spring from the centering sphere.





Assembly Procedure
1. Lower the steering shaft assembly to the race and upper shaft assembly and the steering column tilt head assembly.
2. Assemble the shaft preload spring to the centering sphere.
3. Perform the following steps to assemble the centering sphere:
a. Lubricate the centering sphere with lithium grease.
b. Slip the centering sphere into the upper shaft assembly.
c. Rotate the centering sphere 90 degrees.





4. Perform the following steps to lower the steering shaft assembly to the race and upper shaft assembly:
a. Line up the marks.
b. Tilt the assemblies 90 degrees to each other.
5. Remove the four torx head screws.
6. Remove the steering column support assembly.

Disassembly Procedure
1. Remove the lower steering shaft assembly from the race and upper shaft assembly and the steering column tilt head assembly.
2. Perform the following steps to remove the race and upper shaft assembly from the lower steering shaft assembly:
a. Tilt 90 degrees to each other.
b. Disengage.
3. Perform the following steps to remove the centering sphere from the upper shaft assembly:
a. Rotate the sphere 90 degrees.
b. Slip the sphere out of the upper shaft assembly.
4. Remove the shaft preload spring from the centering sphere.

Assembly Procedure
1. Lower the steering shaft assembly to the race and upper shaft assembly and the steering column tilt head assembly.
2. Assemble the shaft preload spring to the centering sphere.
3. Perform the following steps to assemble the centering sphere:
a. Lubricate the centering sphere with lithium grease.
b. Slip the centering sphere into the upper shaft assembly.
c. Rotate the centering sphere 90 degrees.
4. Perform the following steps to lower the steering shaft assembly to the race and upper shaft assembly:
a. Line up the marks.
b. Tilt the assemblies 90 degrees to each other.
5. Remove the four torx head screws.
6. Remove the steering column support assembly.





Installation Procedure
1. Install the column support assembly.
2. Install the four torx head screws.
- Tighten the screws to 9 Nm (80 lb in).

Notice: Always use the correct fastener In the proper location. When you replace a fastener, use ONLY the exact part number for that application. The manufacturer will call out those fasteners that require a replacement after removal. The manufacturer will also call out the fasteners that require thread lockers or thread sealant. UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED, do not use supplemental coatings (paints, greases, or other corrosion Inhibitors) on threaded fasteners or fastener joint interfaces. Generally, such coatings adversely affect the fastener torque and joint clamping force, and may damage the fastener. When you install fasteners, use the correct tightening sequence and specifications. Following these instructions can help you avoid damage to parts and system.

3. Repeat steps 1 through 4 of the Steering Column Tilt Head Assembly Installation Procedure. Refer to Steering Column Tilt Head Assembly.
4. Install the upper tilt head components. Refer to Upper Tilt Head Components.
5. Install the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly to the column.
- Tighten the screws to 6 Nm (53 lb in).
6. Perform the following steps to install the adapter and bearing assembly to the steering column jacket assembly:
a. Position the tab on the adapter and bearing assembly with the slot in the steering column jacket assembly.
b. Push together the tab into the slot in the steering column jacket assembly.
7. Install the sensor retainer.
8. Install the SIR coil. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Coil (SIR Coil Assembly).
9. Install the lower and upper shrouds. Refer to Steering Column Shrouds.
