Clockspring Assembly / Spiral Cable: Service and Repair





Removal Procedure
1. Remove the upper and lower shrouds. Refer to Steering Column Shrouds.
2. Remove the air bag module and remove the steering wheel. Refer to Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (Driver Inflator Module) and Steering Wheel Replacement.
3. Remove the wire harness straps from the steering wheel column wire harness.
4. Remove the retaining ring
5. Remove the SIR coil assembly.
6. Remove the wave washer.





Installation Procedure
1. Center the following components:
- Center the race and upper shaft assembly.
- Center the SIR coil assembly.
- Center the wheels straight ahead.
- Center the block tooth and centering mark on the shaft assembly at 12 o'clock position.
2. Install the wave washer.
3. Perform the following steps to install the SIR coil assembly:
a. Check that the shaft is centered.
b. Check that the coil is centered.
c. Align the coil with the horn tower.
d. Slide the coil onto the shaft.
4. Install the retaining ring.
5. Check that the retaining ring seats securely in the groove on the shaft.
6. Route the lower coil wire along the steering column jacket assembly.
7. Install the wire harness straps to the steering column wire harness.
8. Install the lower and upper shrouds. Refer to Steering Column Shrouds.
9. Install the steering wheel and air bag module. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement and Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (Driver Inflator Module).
10. Enable the SIR system once all service operations are completed. Refer to Enabling the SIR System in AIR BAGS AND SEAT BELTS.
11. Connect the negative battery cable.

Caution Disconnect the negative battery cable under the following circumstances:
- When installing an electrical unit.
- When a tool or equipment could easily come into contact with "live" exposed electrical terminals.
Failure to disconnect the negative battery terminal may result in personal injury or damage to the vehicle's components. Turn OFF the vehicle ignition, unless instructed otherwise.
