Fuel Tank Cleaning
PROCEDURE1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Relieve the fuel system pressure. Refer to the Fuel Pressure Release Procedure.
3. Drain the fuel tanks. Refer to Draining Fuel Tanks (Pump Inoperative) or Draining Fuel Tanks (Pump Operational).
4. Remove the fuel tanks.
- Refer to Fuel Tank Replacement (Right w/Auto Trans).
- Refer to Fuel Tank Replacement (Left w/Auto Trans).
- Refer to Fuel Tank Replacement (Right w/Manual Trans).
- Refer to Fuel Tank Replacement (Left w/Manual Trans).
5. Remove the fuel sender assemblies. Refer to Fuel Sender Assembly Replacement.
6. Inspect the fuel sender strainers. Replace any contaminated strainers and inspect the fuel pumps.
7. Inspect the fuel pump inlets for dirt and debris. Replace the fuel pump(s) if you find dirt or debris in the fuel pump inlet(s).
IMPORTANT: When flushing the fuel tanks, handle the fuel and water mixture as a hazardous material. Handle the fuel and water mixture in accordance with all applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
8. Flush the fuel tanks with hot water.
9. Pour the water out of the fuel sender assembly openings. Rock the tanks to be sure that removal of the water from the tanks is complete.
10. Install the fuel sender assemblies. Refer to Fuel Sender Assembly Replacement.
11. Install the fuel tanks.
- Refer to Fuel Tank Replacement (Right w/Auto Trans).
- Refer to Fuel Tank Replacement (Left w/Auto Trans).
- Refer to Fuel Tank Replacement (Right w/Manual Trans).
- Refer to Fuel Tank Replacement (Left w/Manual Trans).
12. Refill the fuel system.
13. Install the fuel filler cap.
14. Connect the negative battery cable.
15. Inspect for leaks.
15.1. Turn the ignition switch ON for 2 seconds.
15.2. Turn the ignition switch OFF for 10 seconds.
15.3. Turn the ignition switch ON.
15.4. Check for fuel leaks.
