Front Hub and Bearing
FRONT HUB/BEARING^ Tools Required
- J 42188 Ball Joint Separator
- Or Equivalents
Removal Procedure
Notice: The Front and Rear Wheel Hub/Wheel Speed Sensors are not interchangeable. When you are replacing a Wheel Hub/Wheel Speed Sensor be sure to use the correct Wheel Hub/Wheel Speed Sensor part number. Do not mount the Rear Wheel Hub/Wheel Speed Sensor in the front steering knuckle. The Rear Wheel Hub/Wheel Speed Sensor features a spliced hole through the center of the bearing which mates to the drive axle. The Rear Wheel Hub/Wheel Speed Sensor requires the support of the drive axle and the drive axle nut clamped joint to properly carry the vehicle loads. Mounting the Rear Wheel Hub/Wheel Speed Sensor in the front steering knuckle can cause bearing failure and possible damage to the vehicle.
1. Raise and support the vehicle.
2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
3. Disconnect the wheel speed sensor electrical connector.
4. Remove the brake caliper and rotor.
5. Disconnect the steering linkage outer tie rod from the steering knuckle. Refer to Outer Tie Rod End in Power Steering System. Tie Rod
6. Loosen the upper and lower ball joint stud nuts. Do not remove the nuts.
7. Separate the steering knuckle from the upper control arm using J 42188.
8. Separate the steering knuckle from the lower control arm ball joint stud using J 42188.
9. Remove the upper and lower ball joint stud nuts.
10. Remove the steering knuckle from the upper and lower control arms.
11. Remove the wheel hub mounting bolts.
12. Remove the hub and bearing assembly from the steering knuckle.
Installation Procedure
1. Install the hub and bearing assembly into the steering knuckle.
2. Install the wheel hub mounting bolts.
- Tighten the wheel hub mounting bolts to 95 Nm (70 lb ft).
Notice: Always use the correct fastener In the proper location. When you replace a fastener, use ONLY the exact part number for that application. The manufacturer will call out those fasteners that require a replacement after removal. The manufacturer will also call out the fasteners that require thread lockers or thread sealant. UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED, do not use supplemental coatings (paints, greases, or other corrosion Inhibitors) on threaded fasteners or fastener joint interfaces. Generally, such coatings adversely affect the fastener torque and joint clamping force, and may damage the fastener. When you install fasteners, use the correct tightening sequence and specifications. Following these instructions can help you avoid damage to parts and system.
3. Install the steering knuckle onto the upper and lower control arms. Refer to Upper Control Arm Replacement (RWD) and Lower Control Arm Replacement. Control Arm
4. Install the steering linkage outer tie rod end into the steering knuckle. Refer to Outer Tie Rod End in Power Steering System. Tie Rod
5. Install the brake rotor and caliper.
6. Connect the wheel speed sensor electrical connector.
7. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
8. Lower the vehicle.
