Parking Lock Cable: Service and Repair
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
CAUTION: This vehicle is equipped-with Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR). Refer to CAUTIONS under "ON-VEHICLE SERVICE" and the SIR Component and Wiring Location View before performing service on or around SIR components or wiring. Failure to follow CAUTIONS could result in possible air bag deployment, personal injury, or otherwise unneeded SIR system repairs.
CAUTION: Before removing or Installing any electrical unit, or when a tool or equivalent could easily come in contact with "live" exposed electrical terminals, disconnect the battery negative cable to help prevent personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or components. Unless instructed otherwise, the ignition switch must be in the "OFF" or "LOCK" position.
1. Negative battery cable.
2. Usable the SIR system.
3. Place automatic transmission control in "PARK."
4. Turn ignition key to the "RUN" position.
- Do not proceed to the next step with the ignition key in any other position.
5. Instrument panel insulator (left hand), instrument panel driver knee bolster, and instrument panel driver knee bolster deflector.
6. Front floor console.
7. Park lock clip (813) from stud.
8. Park lock cable (812) from bracket.
9. Move the park lock cable button (815) to the "UP" position.
10. Unsnap cable terminal from park lock lever pin.
11. Lower steering column.
12. Unsnap cable (812) from steering column (816).
INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Make sure ignition key is in the "RUN" position and the automatic transmission control is in "PARK."
- Do not proceed to the next step win the ignition key in any other position.
2. Snap cable terminal to park lock lever pin.
3. Push cable connector forward to remove slack.
4. With no load applied to connector, press button (815) down.
5. Cable (812) to bracket.
a. Push bracket housing against adjusting spring.
b. Drop cable (812) through slot in bracket and seat housing to automatic transnussion control.
6. Push park lock cable lock button (815) down.
7. Snap park lock cable (812) into steering column (816).
8. Raise steering column.
9. Park lock cable clip (813) to stud.
10. Front floor console.
11. Instrument panel insulator (left hand), instrument panel driver knee bolster, and instrument panel driver knee bolster deflector.
12. Turn the ignition key to the "OFF" position.
13. Negative battery cable.
Tighten
- Negative battery cable to 15 Nm (11 ft. lbs.).
14. Enable the SIR system.
Inspect
- Functional operation of the transmission park lock cable.
a. With range: selector lever in "PARK" and the ignition key in "LOCK" position, make sure automatic transmission control cannot be moved to different position. Ignition key should be removable from steering column.
b. With ignition key in "RUN" and automatic transmission control in "NEUTRAL," make sure key cannot be turned to "LOCK."
c. If above conditions are met, system is properly adjusted.
d. If above conditions are not met, put park lock cable lock button (815) back to "UP" position, and readjust as above. Then push button (815) down and recheck operation.
e. If key cannot be removed in "PARK" position, move park lock cable lock button (815) to "UP" position and move cable connector nose rearward until ignition key can be removed.
f. Snap button (815) down.
g. Reinstall park lock cable (812) and park lock cable clip (813) to ensure correct routing.
