General Description
WARNING: Continued operation with a misfiring or flooded engine may cause the catalytic converter to overheat. This could cause damage either to the catalyst itself or the operating vehicle and possible personal injury.CAUTION: When jacking or lifting the vehicle from the frame side rails, be certain lift pads do not contact catalytic converter or damage to the catalytic converter may result. The catalytic converter requires the use of unleaded fuel only, or damage to the catalyst may result.
The catalytic converter is an emission control devise added to the exhaust system to reduce pollutants from the exhaust gas stream. The 3-way catalytic converter burns three types of exhaust gases, carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC) and oxides of nitrogen (NOx). The oxidation catalytic converter burns the above mentioned gases but uses an air pump/smog pump to force added oxygen into the catalytic converter, forcing it to run hotter, thus burning exhaust gases better. A single bed ceramic monolith style "brick" catalytic converter is used in combination with two different types of catalyst. These are oxidation catalyst, and three-way (reduction/oxidation) catalyst. The catalysts have coatings that contain platinum and palladium that burn the unwanted exhaust emissions.
