Timing Chain Replacement

Tools Required, or equivalent:
^ J5825-A Crankshaft Sprocket Remover
^ J39243 Water Pump Driveshaft Assembly Remover
^ J5590 Crankshaft Sprocket Installer
^ J41546 Water Pump Driveshaft Assembly Installer
^ J39087 Water Pump Driveshaft Front Cover Oil Seal Protector
^ J39089 Water Pump Driveshaft O-ring Seal Installer

REMOVAL
1. Remove the water pump. See Cooling System.
2. Remove the distributor. See Powertrain Management.
3. Remove the [1][2]engine front cover.
4. Remove the reluctor ring from the crankshaft hub.





5. Rotate the crankshaft until the sprocket alignment marks on the crankshaft sprocket and the camshaft sprocket are aligned.
6. Remove the camshaft sprocket bolts.

CAUTION: Do not turn the crankshaft after the timing chain has been removed in order to prevent damage to the pistons and the valves.





7. Remove the camshaft sprocket and the camshaft timing chain.
8. Remove the water pump driveshaft bolts.
9. Remove the water pump driveshaft using the Water Pump Driveshaft Assembly Remover.
10. Remove and discard the O-ring seal from the water pump driveshaft.
11. Remove the crankshaft sprocket using the Crankshaft Sprocket Remover.
12. Remove the key if necessary.

INSTALLATION
1. Install the key, if previously removed.
2. Install the crankshaft sprocket using the Crankshaft Sprocket Installer.
3. Install the water pump driveshaft using the Water Pump Driveshaft Assembly Installer.
4. Install the water pump driveshaft bolts. Tighten the water pump driveshaft bolts to 12 Nm (106 inch lbs.).

CAUTION: The camshaft sprocket and the water pump driveshaft gears must mesh or damage to the camshaft retainer may occur.

5. Install the camshaft sprocket.
6. Install the timing chain.
7. Install the camshaft sprocket bolts. Ensure the camshaft and the crankshaft sprocket alignment marks align as shown. Tighten the camshaft sprocket bolts to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
8. Install the new O-ring seal to the water pump driveshaft using the Water Pump Driveshaft O-ring Seal Installer.
9. Install the reluctor ring on the crankshaft hub.
10. Install the [1][2]engine front cover.
11. Install the distributor. See Powertrain Management.
12. Install the water pump. See Cooling System.
