System Overheating

POSSIBLE CAUSE: CORRECTION
1. Loss of engine coolant: Refer to next condition - "Loss of engine coolant."
2. Loss of system pressure: Perform radiator fill cap pressure test.
3. Weak engine coolant solution:Test engine coolant for proper 50-50 mixture.
4. Loose serpentine drive belt: Check serpentine drive belt tension.
5. Advanced/Retarded ignition timing: See Powertrain Management.
6. Obstructed radiator fins: Remove or relocate added-on parts that block air to radiator. Clean away bugs, leaves, and other debris.
7. Cooling system passages blocked by rust or scale: Flush cooling system or flow check radiator. Remove cylinder head and inspect, if required.
8. Kinked reservoir hose: Reroute reservoir hose.
9. Inoperative electric engine coolant fan: See Cooling Fan Motor.
10. Loose, damaged, and/or missing radiator upper and lower shrouds, air deflectors or baffles: Repair or replace as required.
11. Thermostat stuck in the closed position: Replace thermostat.
12. Faulty water pump: Replace water pump.
13. Incorrect radiator: Determine proper radiator for vehicle and replace if necessary.
14. Incorrect or damaged fan blade: Check for correct part number, replace fan blade if required.
15. Faulty emission system components: See Powertrain Management.
^ PCV valve.
^ Catalytic converter plugged.
16. Engine oil overfill: Check engine oil level. Drain and refill if necessary.
17. Water pump drive shaft broken or splines slipping: Replace drive shaft and/or water pump.
18. Electric engine coolant fan operating in reverse, forcing hot air from engine through radiator: Reverse polarity at electric engine coolant fan motor connector terminals.
19. Exhaust system restriction: See Exhaust System.
^ Catalytic converter plugged.
