Rear Pads Replacement

Rear Brake Caliper Components:

Remove or Disconnect
1. Two-thirds of brake fluid from master cylinder reservoir.
2. Raise and suitably support vehicle.
3. Tire and wheel. Install wheel nuts to retain rotor.

Compressing Rear Brake Caliper Piston:

4. Position a C-clamp and tighten until caliper piston (19) bottoms in base of brake caliper (14). Make sure one end of C-clamp rests on brake hose fitting bolt/screw (32) and other end against outer pad (30). It is not necessary to remove the parking brake lever return spring (4) to replace the inner and outer pads.
5. Brake caliper guide pin bolt (13). Discard brake caliper guide pin bolt/screw (13).

Rear Disc Brake Inner And Outer Pad Replacement:

6. Inner and outer pads (29 and 30). Rotate brake caliper (14) around so lower rear brake caliper bolt (9) and guide pin (15). Be careful not to strain hose or cable conduit. Lift out inner and outer pads (29 and 30).
7. Brake pad anti-squeal shim (10). Discard anti-squeal shim (10). Clean All residue from shoe guide surfaces on caliper mounting plate (17) and rear brake caliper (14). Inspect Caliper guide pins (153 for free movement in caliper mounting plate (17). Inspect Caliper guide pin boot (16) for proper seating in retaining groove of guide pin (15) and caliper mounting plate (17). Replace caliper guide pins (15) or guide pin boots (16) if corroded or damaged. Refer to Rear Brake Caliper Replacement.

INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. New brake pad anti-squeal shim (10).
2. New inner and outer pads (29 and 30). Whenever rear disc brake pads are replaced, immediately check the parking brake free-travel. Adjust as necessary. Outer pad (30) with insulator is installed toward rear brake caliper (14). Inner pad (29) with wear sensor is installed nearest the piston (19). Wear sensor must be on leading edge of inner pad (29) with forward wheel rotation. If not, use other inner pad (29) in replacement kit. Replace inner and outer pads (29 and 30) in axle sets only.
3. Rotate rear brake caliper (14) into its operating position. Springs on outer pad (30) must not stick through inspection hole in rear brake caliper (14). If springs are sticking through inspection hole, lift rear brake caliper (14) and reposition outer pad (30).
4. New brake caliper guide pin bolt (13). Tighten Brake caliper guide pin bolt (13) to 37 Nm (27 ft. lbs.). Inspect Rear brake caliper guide pin boot (16) for proper seating in retaining groove of caliper guide pin (15) and caliper mounting plate (17).
5. With engine running, pump brake pedal slowly and firmly to seat inner and outer pads (29 and 30). Inspect Parking brake actuator levers (5) to ensure they are against stops on rear brake caliper (14). Inspect If parking brake actuator levers are not on their stops.
6. Tire and wheel. Remove wheel nuts securing rotor (39).
7. Lower vehicle.
8. Fill master cylinder reservoir to proper level.
