Rear Cables Replacement

NOTE: This vehicle is equipped with a blind cable system at the brake drum. The rear parking brake cable can be installed to the brake drum without disassembling the brake drum.





REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Fully disengage parking brake lever. Be sure handle is down and brake indicator lamp is not lit. If parking brake lever is partially engaged, it will not be possible to pull equalizer rearward in step 3.
2. Raise and suitably support vehicle.





3. Rear parking brake cables from parking brake cable equalizer.
a. Pull parking brake cable equalizer rearward to gain necessary cable slack.
b. Insert fabricated spacer to hold parking brake cable equalizer in place.
c. Remove left or right rear cable from equalizer.
4. Left or right rear cable from underbody bracket and retainer. Use J 37043 to compress retainer fingers on casing and pull rear cable from underbody bracket.
5. Pull rear cable through guides installed on rear axle housing.
6. Rear tire and wheel.
7. Rear brake drum.
8. Left or right rear cable from backing plate. Use J 37043 to compress retainer fingers and pull out left or right rear cable.
9. Cable end fitting from parking brake lever.

INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Rear brake drum. Make sure the guide spring projects through the hole in the backing plate so that cable insertion can be performed.
2. Feed left rear cable through guide and right rear cable through guide on rear axle housing.
3. Cable end fitting into parking brake lever. This can be done by inserting tear drop shaped end fitting into guide spring until a click is heard. After click is heard, pull on cable to ensure connection has been made.
4. Rear cable to backing plate. Ensure that retainer fingers are seated.
5. Rear tire and wheel.
6. Rear cable into underbody bracket. If it was necessary to remove the tie strap from the brake cables, then a new tie strap must be installed in its original position.
7. Rear parking brake cable to parking brake cable equalizer.
8. Remove fabricated spacer.
9. Lower vehicle.
10. Cycle parking brake lever three times.
