Console: Description and Operation

The console fits over the tunnel in the floor of the vehicle and extends from under the center of the instrument panel to just before the rear seat area. The front floor console is a one piece design.

The console, located between the driver and passenger seats covers the transmission shift lever and the park brake lever. Also housed within the console is a power outlet and three cup holders, one cup holder for the passenger and two for the rear seat occupants. The console storage compartment is located at the rear of the console. The storage compartment also contains a cassette tape/compact disc storage area, and a removable coin holder. The padded door of the storage compartment serves as a front seat center armrest. Attached to the center console is the transmission shift opening trim plate.

The trim plate contains a ash tray, cup holder (for the driver) cigarette lighter, and the PRNDL for the automatic transmission. Attached to the console is the console accessory trim plate, this trim plate may contain any of the following switches for Pontiac: convertible top, traction control or second gear start. For Chevrolet the accessory trim plate will house only the convertible top switch.
