Removal Procedure
1. Remove the hood panel.
2. Remove the transmission fluid level indicator.
3. Remove the engine mount strut brackets.
4. Disconnect the electric cooling fan.
5. Install the support fixtures (J 28467-360, J 28467-90, and J 36462).
6. Remove the air intake duct.
7. Remove the automatic transmission vacuum modulator pipe.
8. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the transmission.
9. Remove the transmission range switch from the transmission.
10. Remove the upper transmission to engine bolts.
11. Raise the vehicle.
12. Support the vehicle on a suitable stand.
13. Remove the tire.
14. Remove the left front bumper fascia splash shield.
15. Remove the front exhaust manifold pipe.
16. Remove the following steering gear components:
- The heat shield
- The bolts
17. Remove the front lower control arms from the front suspension struts.
18. Remove the power steering fluid cooling pipe.
19. Support the following components on suitable floor stands:
- The drivetrain
- The front suspension frame
20. Remove the transmission mount side bracket nuts.
21. Remove the engine mount frame side nuts.
22. Remove the transmission brace.
23. Remove the drivetrain bolts.
24. Remove the front suspension frame bolts.
25. Remove the drivetrain.
26. Remove the front suspension frame.
27. Disconnect the electrical connector from the vehicle speed sensor.
28. Remove the front wheel driveshaft from the transmission.
29. Remove the transmission converter cover.
30. Remove the starter motor.
31. Remove the transmission torque converter bolts.
32. Remove the transaxle upper and lower oil cooler pipes.
33. Install a transmission jack.
34. Remove the transmission mount from the engine.
35. Remove the transmission fluid filler tube.
36. Remove the transmission from the following bolts.
37. Remove the transmission.
38. Remove the transmission torque converter from the transmission.
39. Remove the transmission from the transmission jack.
40. Flush the transmission cooler and lines whenever the transmission is removed for overhaul or replacement of the following components occurs:
- The transmission torque converter
- The transmission pump
- The case
Installation Procedure
1. Install the transmission on the transmission jack.
2. Install the transmission torque converter on the transmission.
3. Install the transmission.
4. Install the lower rear transmission to engine bolts.
Tighten the bolts to 75 Nm (55 ft.lb.)
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
5. Install the transmission fluid filler tube.
6. Install the transmission mount to the engine.
7. Remove the jackstand from the transmission.
8. Install the upper and lower transmission oil cooler pipes.
9. Install the transmission torque converter bolts.
Tighten the bolts to 63 Nm (46 ft.lb.)
10. Install the starter motor.
11. Install the transmission converter cover.
12. Install the transmission converter cover bolts.
Tighten the bolts to 10 Nm (89 in.lb.)
13. Install the front wheel drive shafts to the transmission.
14. Connect the electrical connector to the vehicle speed sensor.
15. Install the drivetrain.
16. Install the front suspension frame bolts.
Tighten the bolts to 180 Nm (133 ft.lb.)
17. Install the transmission brace.
18. Install the transmission mount side bracket nuts.
19. Remove the floor stands from the following components:
- The drivetrain
- The front suspension frame
20. Install the power steering fluid cooling pipe.
21. Install the front lower control arms to the front suspension struts.
22. Install the steering gear bolts.
23. Install the steering gear heat shield.
24. Install the front exhaust manifold pipe.
25. Install the left front bumper fascia splash shield.
26. Install the tire.
27. Lower the vehicle.
28. Install the upper transmission to engine bolts.
Tighten the bolts to 75 Nm (55 ft.lb.)
29. Install the transmission range switch on the transmission.
30. Connect the electrical connectors on the transmission.
31. Install the automatic transmission vacuum modulator pipe.
32. Install the air intake duct.
33. Remove the support fixtures (J 28467-360, J 28467-90, and J 36462).
34. Connect the electrical engine cooling fan.
35. Install the engine mount strut brackets.
36. Install the transmission fluid level indicator.
37. Install the hood pan.
38. Adjust the fluid level.
39. Adjust the shift linkage.
40. Inspect for proper repair completions.
41. Inspect for fluid leaks.
