Water Pump: Service and Repair

Fig. 23 Water Pump & Thermostat Replacement:

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Disconnect intake air temperature sensor electrical connector.
3. Remove air cleaner and duct assembly.
4. Remove radiator surge tank cap, then drain cooling system and remove knock sensor.
5. Disconnect upper and lower radiator hose, heater hose and coolant sensor electrical connector from water pump.
6. Remove coolant sensor wire retainer from front of water pump.
7. Using a 5/8 inch box wrench on serpentine drive belt tensioner, left tensioner upward and remove belt from alternator pulley.
8. Remove six water pump to engine attaching bolts, then remove water pump, Fig. 23.
9. Reverse procedure to install. Prior to assembling coupling to pump, apply a light coat of grease to seals and splines. When installing coupling, white band should face toward engine, Fig. 23 Install water pump gaskets with tabs facing upward. After installation bleed cooling system.
