Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

LEFT SIDE
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Raise and support vehicle, then disconnect catalytic converter from exhaust manifold.
3. Drain cooling system, then lower vehicle.
4. Disconnect upper radiator hose, then remove serpentine drive belt.
5. Remove intake manifold.
6. Remove center panel from lefthand wheel well.
7. Remove A/C compressor and position aside with refrigerant hoses attached.
8. Remove alternator and A/C compressor brace.
9. Remove spark plug wire bracket, then disconnect spark plug wires from spark plugs.
10. Remove spark plugs from cylinder head.
11. Remove lefthand exhaust manifold.
12. Remove alternator and brace.
13. Disconnect AIR diverter valve hose.
14. Remove valve cover, then remove drive belt tensioner and idler pulley.
15. Remove power steering pump attaching bolts, then disconnect hoses and remove power steering pump.
16. Disconnect spark plug wires and coil wire at distributor.
17. Remove accessory mounting bracket.
18. Remove rocker arms and pushrods. Tag rocker arms and pushrods so they can be installed in the same positions.
19. Remove cylinder head attaching bolts, then remove cylinder head and gasket.
20. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. When installing cylinder head gasket, position over dowel pins with bead facing upward.
b. Prior to installing cylinder head bolts, coat threads with sealer 1052080 or equivalent.
C. Using sequence shown in Fig. 6, tighten cylinder bolts in two steps; first step torque all bolts to 22 ft. lbs., second step tighten all short bolts (Nos. 3, 4, 7, 8, 11, 12, 15, 16) an additional 67°;, then tighten all medium and long bolts (Nos. 1, 2, 5, 6, 9, 10, 13, 14 & 17) an additional 80°
RIGHT SIDE
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Raise and support vehicle, then disconnect catalytic converter from exhaust manifold.
3. Drain cooling system, then lower vehicle.
4. Disconnect lower radiator and heater hoses.
5. Remove power steering pump reservoir from cylinder head and position out of way.
6. Remove coil and bracket.
7. Remove intake manifold.
8. Remove spark plug wires from clips, then remove front spark plug wire bracket.
9. Remove oil level dipstick and tube.
10. Disconnect spark plug wire, then remove spark plugs from cylinder head.
11. Remove righthand exhaust manifold.
12. Remove cylinder head rear vent pipe and valve cover.
13. Remove power steering pump attaching bolts, then disconnect hoses and remove power steering pump.
14. Remove rocker arms and pushrods. Tag rocker arms and pushrods so they can be installed in the same positions.
15. Remove cylinder head attaching bolts, then remove cylinder head and gasket.
16. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. When installing cylinder head gasket, position over dowel pins with bead facing upward.
