Engine Removal and Installation
TOOL REQUIRED
^ J 28467-360 Engine Support Fixture
Remove or Disconnect
1. Depressurize the fuel system.
2. Negative battery cable.
3. Top half of the air cleaner assembly and the throttle body duct.
4. Drain the coolant.
5. Upper radiator hose from the engine and pull the upper radiator hose back.
6. Lower radiator hose from the engine and pull the lower radiator hose back.
7. Coolant inlet line from the surge tank.
8. Vacuum hoses
^ Vacuum modulator
^ EVAP canister purge
^ Power brake booster line
9. Heater outlet hose from the water pump.
10. Serpentine belt.
11. Accelerator cable and the cruise control cable, if equipped, from the throttle linkage.
12. Upper wiring from the engine.
^ Electronic ignition
^ Heated Oxygen sensor (HO2S)
^ Injector harness
^ IAC
^ Throttle Position (TP) sensor
^ Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor
^ Park/Nuetral position switch
^ Transmission shift solenoid and TCC solenoid
^ EGR
^ Ground at the transaxle
13. Generator.
14. Power steering lines at the pump.
15. Fuel lines.
16. Cooling fan assembly.
17. Shift cable linkage from the mounting bracket.
^ Put the transmission in low gear for accessibility if necessary.
18. Transaxle vent tube from the transaxle.
19. Vacuum hose at the vacuum reservoir.
20. Engine Support Fixture, J 28467
21. Loosen the top two A/C compressor bolts. Do not remove the bolts.
22. Raise the vehicle suitably and support.
23. Front tire and wheel assemblies.
24. Right and Left splash shields.
25. Engine mount strut from the suspension support.
26. Both front ABS wheel speed sensors connectors and the harness from the suspension supports.
27. Both of the ball joints.
28. Suspension support assembly.
29. Drive axles from the transaxle and support.
30. Oil filter.
31. Oil filter adapter.
32. Transaxle converter cover.
33. Starter.
34. Lower wiring on engine
^ Knock sensor
^ Front crankshaft position sensor
^ Side crankshaft position sensor
^ Oil level sensor
^ VSS
^ Grounds from the transaxle
35. Both of the heater hoses.
36. A/C compressor lower bolts. Support the compressor aside.
37. Vacuum reserve tank.
38. Exhaust pipe from the manifold and position the exhaust pipe aside.
^ If necessary, push the engine forward while you position the exhaust system aside.
39. Engine mount strut bracket.
40. Transaxle cooler lines at the radiator.
41. Transaxle fluid indicator and tube.
42. Lower the vehicle and the engine/transaxle onto a suitable table.
43. Transaxle mount to body bolts.
44. Intermediate bracket from the right engine mount support bracket.
45. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle. Leave the powertrain on the table.
46. Separate the engine from the transaxle assembly.
Install or Connect
1. Connect the engine and the transaxle.
2. Position the engine under the vehicle.
3. Lower the vehicle onto the table.
4. Loosely install the drive belt.
5. Install the engine mount support bracket to the intermediate bracket.
6. Install the transaxle mount to body bolts.
7. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle.
8. Install the transaxle fluid indicator and tube.
9. Install the transaxle cooler lines at the radiator.
10. Install the exhaust pipe to the exhaust manifold. If necessary, push the engine forward while you position the exhaust system.
11. Install the vacuum reserve tank.
12. Loosely assemble the A/C compressor bracket and the upper compressor bolts. Retain the bolts and the bracket to the compressor for ease of assembly.
13. Install the lower A/C compressor bolts.
14. Connect both heater hoses to the cowl.
15. Connect the following lower wiring items to the engine:
^ Knock sensor
^ Front crankshaft position sensor
^ Side crankshaft position sensor
^ Oil level sensor
^ VSS
^ Grounds from the transaxle
16. Install the starter.
17. Install the transaxle converter cover.
18. Install the oil filter adapter.
19. Install the oil filter.
20. Install the drive axles to the transaxle
21. Install the suspension support assembly.
22. Install both of the bail joints.
23. Connect both of the front ABS wheel speed sensor connectors.
24. Install the splash shields.
25. Install the front tire and wheel assemblies.
27. Install the upper A/C compressor bolts.
28. Remove the engine support fixture.
29. Install the vacuum hose at the vacuum reservoir.
30. Install the transmission vent tube to the transmission.
31. Connect the shift cable linkage to the mounting bracket. Connect the shift cable to the mounting bracket.
32. Install the cooling fan assembly.
33. Install the fuel lines.
34. Install the power steering lines at the pump.
35. Install the generator.
36. Connect the following upper wiring items to the engine:
^ Electronic Ignition
^ Heated Oxygen sensor (HO2S)
^ Injector harness
^ IAC
^ Throttle Position (TP) sensor
^ Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor
^ Transaxle range switch
^ Transmission shift solenoid and TCC solenoid
^ EGR
^ Ground at the transmission
37. Connect the accelerator cable and cruise control cable, if equipped, to the throttle linkage.
38. Install the drive belt.
39. Install the heater outlet hose to the water pump.
40. Connect the following vacuum hoses:
^ Vacuum modulator
^ EVAP canister purge
^ Power brake booster line
41. Install the coolant inlet line to the surge tank.
42. Install the lower radiator hose to the engine.
43. Install the upper radiator hose to the engine.
44. Install the top half of the air cleaner assembly. Install the throttle body duct.
45. Connect the negative battery cable.
46. Bleed the power steering system.
