Alternator Replacement

Fig. 6 Alternator Mounting. 5.7L Single Cam 32 Valve Engine:

1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then remove intake air duct.
2. Remove throttle body extension.
3. Using a 1/2 inch breaker bar, rotate serpentine drive belt tensioner to release belt tension.
4. Remove serpentine drive belt from water pump pulley, then remove belt.
5. Remove alternator lower support bolts and bracket, Fig. 5.
6. Remove rear support bracket to alternator retaining bolt.
7. Remove alternator upper support bolts and bracket.
8. Disconnect electrical connector, then remove oil sender unit.
9. Disconnect electrical connectors from alternator, then remove alternator from vehicle.
10. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Apply Loctite 565 or equivalent to threads of alternator mounting bolts prior to installation. Torque alternator mounting bolts to 19 ft. lbs.
b. When installing serpentine drive belt, position belt over A/C compressor pulley. Retract belt tensioner using a 1/2 inch drive ratchet and route belt over alternator, crankshaft and power steering pump pulleys, then position belt behind water pump pulley. Ensure belt is properly positioned on pulleys, then pull belt forward onto water pump pulley. Release belt tensioner.
c. Torque throttle body extension attaching bolts to 53 inch lbs.
