REMOVAL
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove water pump as described under WATER PUMP
3. Discharge A/C refrigerant system, then remove A/C compressor.
4. Remove steering gear, if necessary.
5. Remove serpentine drive belt.
6. Remove crankshaft damper to crankshaft retaining bolt and washer, then remove damper using puller J-24420-C or equivalent.
7. Remove key from crankshaft keyway.
8. Remove front cover attaching screws and nuts, then remove front cover, Fig. 9.
9. Using tool No. J-29077-A, remove seal from front cover.

INSTALLATION
1. Apply Loctite 262 or equivalent to front cover stud threads. Apply Loctite 565 or equivalent to front cover bolt threads.
2. Position front cover and gasket to engine, then install attaching bolts and nuts finger tight.
3. Lubricate front cover seal with engine oil, then install seal using installation tool No. J-37309 or equivalent, Fig. 10. Torque front cover attaching bolts and nuts to specification, then remove seal installation tool.
4. Install water pump and A/C compressor.
5. Apply engine oil to seal surface of crankshaft damper, then position damper to crankshaft.
6. Apply Loctite 262 or equivalent to crankshaft damper attaching bolt, then install bolt and tighten to specification.
7. Install serpentine drive belt and connect battery ground cable.
