Secondary Timing Chain

Removal
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove camshafts as described under CAMSHAFT.
3. Remove primary timing chain as described previously.
4. Disengage left and right hand secondary timing chains from idler sprocket.
5. Remove idler sprocket attaching bolts, then remove idle sprocket, Fig. 11.
6. Remove left and right hand secondary timing chains.

Installation
1. Install longer outer secondary timing chain through left hand cylinder head and hold in position with retainer J-38099 or equivalent, then place chain on inner idler sprocket.
2. Install shorter inner secondary timing chain through right hand cylinder head and hold in position with retainer J-38099 or equivalent, then place chain on outer idler sprocket.
3. Install primary timing chain as described previously.
4. Install camshafts as described under CAMSHAFT.
5. Connect battery ground cable.



CAMSHAFT TIMING












This vehicle does not use timing marks on the camshaft or crankshaft sprockets for either the primary or secondary timing chains. According to the OE service manual Special Tools are required, Kent Moore J 38099, J 38098, J 37326 or equivalent must be used to position the camshaft and crankshaft for timing chain installation.
