Primary Timing Chain
Fig. 11 Primary & Secondary Timing Chains & Guides:
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove engine front cover as described under ENGINE FRONT COVER.
3. Remove left and right hand intake camshafts as described under CAMSHAFT.
4. Remove bolts attaching primary timing chain guide to oil pump, then remove chain guide.
5. Remove idler sprocket assembly attaching bolts, Fig. 11.
6. Detach primary timing chain from idler sprocket and crankshaft sprocket, then remove timing chain from engine.
7. Reverse procedure to install. Apply Loctite 262 or equivalent to idle sprocket attaching and primary timing guide bolt threads prior to installation. When installing primary timing chain guide, use only finger pressure to remove slack from chain.
CAMSHAFT TIMING
This vehicle does not use timing marks on the camshaft or crankshaft sprockets for either the primary or secondary timing chains. According to the OE service manual Special Tools are required, Kent Moore J 38099, J 38098, J 37326 or equivalent must be used to position the camshaft and crankshaft for timing chain installation.
