SQUEAL NOISE FROM ENGINE COMPARTMENT


Model and Year:
1993 CAVALIER WITH 2.2L ENG (RPO LN2)



CONDITION:

Some owners of 1993 J cars with 2.2L engines may comment on a squealing noise coming from the engine compartment.

VIN BREAKPOINTS:

Use this procedure on vehicles built before November 1, 1992. Refer to vehicle certification label on left front door.

CAUSE:

Accessory drive belt out of alignment.


CORRECTION:

Loosen and retighten the generator, bracket and brace fasteners to specification using the sequence listed below. Replace the serpentine drive belt if the following procedure does not fix the concern.


SERVICE INFORMATION:


1. Disconnect battery negative cable.

IMPORTANT:
Mark the serpentine drive belt to show belt rotation. The serpentine drive belt must be reinstalled to run in the same direction it rotated before it was removed.

2. Remove serpentine drive belt, refer to Section 6A2 in the service manual.

3. Remove the generator heat shield.





4. Loosen generator fasteners (do not remove from vehicle), refer to Figure 1.





5. Loosen generator bracket and brace fasteners (do not remove from the vehicle), refer to Figure 2.

6. With generator bracket and brace fasteners loose, tighten generator fasteners to specification in proper sequence.


IMPORTANT:
Make sure the generator is not binding. Spin the generator pulley by hand at least one revolution. Redo steps four and six if the generator pulley does not spin freely. Check generator pulley for binding. Replace the generator if the pulley still does not spin freely.





7. Tighten generator bracket and brace fasteners to specification in proper sequence. Refer to Figure 2.

8. Install generator heat shield.

9. Install serpentine drive belt, refer to Section 6A2 in the service manual.

10. Connect the battery negative cable.
