NO: 476201

SECTION: 6 - ENGINE

DATE: October, 1994

SUBJECT:
Accessory Drive Belt Wear (File off Excess Material)

MODELS:
1993-94 Chevrolet Camaro
1993-94 Pontiac Firebird
with 5.7L Engine (VIN P - RPO LT1)
Prior to VIN Breakpoint: 2G1FP22P2R2158372 - Chevrolet
Prior to VIN Breakpoint: 2G2FV22P7R2223329 - Pontiac

Condition

Some owners may experience excessive belt shredding on the inner edge side of the belt.

Cause

Belt making contact with water pump casting flash material below the lower RH water pump bolt.
(See Figures 1 and 2.)

Correction

Break off the sharp edge of the flash material with a
pair of pliers, then file the area smooth. (See Figure 2.) Do not remove the lower RH water pump bolt. If the bolt is removed, the water pump sealing surface will be disturbed and the gasket will have to be replaced. Water pumps built after January 31, 1994 are cast so as not to have flash material in this area.
