Defroster Grille and Instrument Panel - Rattles

File In Section: 8 - Chassis/Body Electrical

Bulletin No: 53-83-16

Date: November, 1995

Subject:
Rattle Between Defroster Grille and Instrument Panel (Place Butyl Between Defroster Grille and I/P)

Models:
1993-96 Chevrolet Beretta, Corsica

Condition

Some owners may comment that the defroster grille may rattle or itch against the instrument panel.

Cause

Close tolerances without enough retaining force may be allowing movement of the defroster grille causing an itch or rattle.

Correction

Place two pieces of butyl between the instrument panel and defroster grille, one on each side of the air vent as indicated in Figure 1.

Left Side: Place butyl 15 mm (19/32") right of the VIN plate and 10 mm (13/32") rearward of the windshield.

Right Side: Place butyl 70 mm (2 3/4") right of the inboard retaining clip and 10 mm (13/32") rearward of the windshield.

Procedure

1. Remove defroster grille with a blunt tool to eliminate damage to the instrument panel (begin removal from the right side of the instrument panel).
2. Install butyl (refer to Figure 1 and above text for proper positioning).
3. Install defroster grille (begin installation from the left side of the instrument panel).

Important:
When removing a defroster grille with butyl in place, take care not to get the butyl on the instrument panel topper pad.
