8. Retaining ring (5), orientation plate cam (6), turn signal cancelling cam (7), upper bearing spring (8) inner race seat (9) and inner race (10).
9. Pull tilt lever bracket on column housing assembly (13) and tilt column all the way up.
10. Insert phillips head screwdriver into square opening in spring retainer (22), push down and turn left to release retainer (22) and wheel tilt spring (21).
11. Spring retainer (22) and tilt spring (21).
12. Two pivot pins (4) with J 21854-01 as shown.
13. Place lock cylinder in the "RUN" position.
14. Pull tilt lever to release column housing (13) and remove column housing (13) from housing support (35).
15. Wire support screw (18) and wire support (10)
16. Shear bolts (11), shear bolt washers (12) and lock cylinder housing (15) from column housing (13) as follows:
^ Drill off head of shear bolts (11) down to steel shear bolt washers (12) with a 6.5 mm (1/4") drill bit. (See Figure 6)
^ Separate washers (12) and lock cylinder housing (15) from column housing (13).
^ Remove threaded end of shear bolts (11) from ignition switch housing (15) with locking pliers.
Important: After drilling, clean all metal shavings from all parts.

18. Tilt bumpers (34) from housing support (35) with pliers.
19. Housing support screws (33) and housing support (35) from jacket assembly (36).
Disassemble
When necessary, the steering shaft assembly (32) may be serviced as follows:
Important: Prior to separation of upper shaft (31) and lower shaft (28) note relationship of upper shaft with alignment mark in threaded end at 12 o'clock position and lower shaft pinch bolt groove at 9 o'clock position. Refer to this orientation for proper reassembly.
1. Position upper shaft (31) 90~ to lower shaft (28) and separate. (See Figure 7)
2. Rotate centering sphere (29) 90~ and remove from upper shaft (3 1).
3. Separate sphere halves (29) and joint preload spring (30).
Assemble
1. Lubricate centering sphere halves (29) and joint preload spring (30) with lithium grease.
2. Spring (30) between sphere halves (29) with ends of spring in notches (See Figure 7).
3. Lubricate sphere end of upper shaft (31) with lithium grease.
4. Sphere (29) into upper shaft (31) and rotate sphere 90~.
5. Lubricate sphere end of lower shaft (28) with lithium grease.
Important: To insure proper operation, align upper shaft (31) and lower shaft (28) as follows:
^ Place alignment notch on threaded end of upper shaft (31) at 12 o'clock position.
^ Pinch bolt groove near end of lower shaft (28) must be at 9 o'clock position. (See Figure 8)
6. Position upper shaft (31) 90~ to lower shaft (28), engage and straighten. (See Figure 7)
