Tools Required:

J 23653-91 Lock Plate Adapter

J 23653-C Lock Plate Compressor

Remove or Disconnect

1. Perform steps 1 through 4, Remove or Disconnect, in the previous section.
2. Park lock cable from ignition switch and lock cylinder assembly (19) by depressing locking tab with a small screwdriver (See Figure 3).
3. Wire harness at bulkhead connector.
4. Steering column from vehicle. See COMPONENT REPLACEMENT AND REPAIR PROCEDURES/STEERING WHEEL.
5. Steering column jacket bushing (17) from lower end of jacket assembly (16), if not removed previously.
6. Perform steps 5 through 11, Remove or Disconnect, as detailed in the previous section.

Important: Turn signal switch (18) must be removed before compressing cam plate (6) and shaft spring (8) to prevent damage to switch (8).

7. Compress cam plate (6) and shaft spring (8) with J 23653-91 and J 23653-C or equivalent. (See Figure 4).
8. Retaining ring (5).
9. Orientation cam plate (6).
10. Cancelling cam assembly (7).
11. Upper steering shaft spring (8).
12. Thrust washer (9).
13. Place the lock cylinder in the "RUN " position.
14. Steering shaft assembly (25) from lower end of jacket assembly (16).
15. Shear bolts (13), shear bolt washers (14) and ignition switch housing (19) as follows:
^ Drill off head of shear bolts (13) with a 6. 5 mm (1/4") drill bit (See Figure 5).
^ Separate washers (14) and switch housing (19) from column housing (15).
^ Remove threaded end of shear bolts (13) from ignition switch housing (19) with locking pliers.

Important: After drilling, clean all metal shavings from all parts.

16. Hex head screws (10).
17. Separate column housing (15) from jacket assembly (16).

Install or Connect

Important: Firmly seat all fasteners in the following steps before tightening them to the specified torque.
