Oil Pan: Service and Repair
Remove or Disconnect
1. Battery negative cable.
2. Air cleaner.
3. Distributor cap and wires.
4. Upper fan shroud.
5. Transmission fluid and engine oil dipsticks. Raise and suitably support the vehicle.
6. Engine oil.
7. AIR pipe-to-converter at exhaust manifold (V6).
8. Exhaust pipe at the manifolds.
9. Flywheel cover.
10. Transmission fluid cooler lines at the clips on the oil pan.
11. Transmission dipstick tube.
12. Starter.
NOTICE: The oil level sensor must be removed before removing the oil pan or damage could occur to the oil level sensor and oil pump pickup screen and pipe.
13. Oil level sensor electrical connection (V8).
14. Oil level sensor (V8).
15. Engine mount through bolts.
16. Oil pan nuts and bolts with the reinforcement (91).
^ Turn the crankshaft timing mark to the 6 o'clock position to get the crankshaft out of the way.
^ Lower the oil pan (92) and check that the forward crankshaft throw and counterbalance weight are not in the way of oil pan removal.
^ Raise the engine enough to remove the oil pan (92).
17. Oil pan (92).
18. Oil pan gasket (93).
Clean
^ Oil pan (92) and cylinder block gasket surfaces.
Install or Connect
NOTICE: Only a small amount of sealant is required. Excessive amounts of sealant may cause an improper seal and oil leakage.
^ Apply a small amount of sealer, GM part number 1052914, or equivalent, to the front cover and cylinder block junction and to the rear seal retainer and cylinder block junction. Apply sealer 25 mm (1 inch) in either direction of the radius cavity of these junctions.
1. New gasket (93) to oil pan (92).
2. Oil pan (92).
^ Turn the crankshaft as necessary.
^ Loosely install the nuts and bolts with the reinforcement (91).
^ Ensure the pipe clamps are installed on the bolts they were removed from.
^ Lower the engine.
Tighten
^ Nuts to 23 N.m (17 lb. ft.).
^ Bolts to 11 N.m (97 lb. in.).
3. Engine mount through bolts.
4. Starter.
5. Transmission fluid cooler lines to the clips on the oil pan (92).
6. Flywheel cover.
7. Exhaust pipe at the manifold.
8. AIR pipe-to-converter to exhaust manifold (V6).
9. Oil level sensor (V8).
10. Oil level sensor electrical connection (V8).
11. Transmission dipstick tube.
^ Lower the vehicle.
12. Upper fan shroud.
13. Transmission fluid and engine oil dipsticks.
14. Distributor.
15. Air cleaner.
16. Battery negative cable.
^ Refill the crankcase with engine oil of the proper type and amount.
Inspect
^ For leaks, after running the engine.
