Transaxle Case
DISASSEMBLE
Remove bearings and bushings only if there is evidence of damage or if a mating component is being replaced.
1. Perform the following:
a. Remove snap ring (210) and plug (209).
b. Remove screw (205), spring (206) and sliding sleeve (207).
c. Remove sliding sleeve bushing (95), using sliding sleeve bushing removal tool No. J-36034 and drive handle tool No. J-36190, or equivalents, as shown in view A.
d. Remove detent lever (145).
e. Remove shift detent lever bushing (96), using lever bushing removal tool No. J-36039 and driver handle tool No. J-36190, or equivalents (view C).
2. Remove shift shaft bearing (97) using shift shaft bearing removal tool No. J-36027 and driver handle tool No. J-36190, or equivalents.
3. Remove axle shaft seal (23).
4. Remove differential carrier support outer race (59) using bearing removal tool No. J-26941 and slide hammer tool No. J-23907, or equivalents.
5. Remove plugs (204).
6. Remove input shaft support bearing (93) and output shaft support bearing (86) using universal driver handle tool No. J-8092, or equivalent.
7. Remove shift rail bushings (99) using shift rail bushing removal tool No. J-36029 (small end of second adapter in bushing) and drive handle tool No. J-36190, or equivalents.
8. Remove back-up lamp switch assembly, then the reverse shift rail bushing (98) using reverse shift rail bushing removal tool No. J-36032 and slide hammer tool No. J-23907, or equivalents, or drive bushing downward and pull out through back-up lamp switch bore.
9. Remove spring pin (211).
INSPECTION
Inspect all components for excessive wear and/or damage. Replace worn and/or damaged components as required.
ASSEMBLE
1. Install shift shaft bearing (97) using shift shaft bearing installation tool No. J-36189 and driver handle tool No. J-36190, or equivalents.
2. Install shift shaft seal (208) using shift rail bushing remover/installer tool No. J-36029 and drive handle tool No. J-36190, or equivalents.
3. Install shift rail bushings (99) using installation shift rail bushing remover/ installer tool No. J-36029 and drive handle tool No. J-36190, or equivalents.
4. Install reverse rail bushing (98) using reverse shift rail bushing installer tool No. J-36030 and driver handle tool No. J-36190, or equivalents.
5. Install differential carrier support outer race (59) using race and seal installer tool No. J-26938, or equivalent.
6. Apply sealant part No. 1052942 to case bore where axle shaft seal (23) is installed, then fill seal lips with chassis grease.
7. Install axle shaft seal (23) using race and seal installer tool No. J-26938, or equivalent.
8. Apply gasket maker part No. 1052943, or equivalent, to edges of plugs (204), then install. Ensure plugs are even with transaxle case assembly.
9. Install detent lever bushing (96) using shift detent lever bushing installation tool No. J-36039 and driver handle tool No. J-36190, or equivalents.
10. Install detent lever assembly (145).
11. Install sliding sleeve (207), spring (206) and plug (205).
12. Perform the following:
a. Install plug (209) and snap ring (210), with flat side facing upward.
b. Install stud (211), chamfer end facing outward. Tighten stud to specifications.
13. Apply Teflon sealant part No. 10520880, or equivalent, to back-up lamp switch assembly threads, then install back-up lamp switch assembly. Tighten switch to specifications.
