Mark position of steering wheel in relation to shaft prior to removal to ensure correct installation.
Removal
1. Place ignition switch in off position.
2. Remove Airbag fuse from fuse panel.
3. Remove lower left hand trim panel, then disconnect connector position assurance and yellow two way SIR connector at base of steering column.
4. Disconnect battery ground cable.
5. Remove inflator module attaching screws from rear of steering wheel, Fig. 23.
6. Lift inflator module from steering wheel, then disconnect electrical connectors and connector position assurance from inflator module. To lessen chances of personal injury, when carrying an inflator module, position bag and trim cover away you. Never carry module by wiring or electrical connector. Also when placing inflator module on work bench or other surface, face bag and trim cover upward, away from surface.
7. Remove steering wheel retaining nut.
8. Then using puller J-1859-03 or equivalent, pull steering wheel from steering shaft, Fig. 24.
9. Disconnect horn electrical connect and remove steering wheel.
Installation
1. Connect horn electrical connector.
2. Position steering wheel spline alignment marks to alignment marks of steering shaft splines, then install steering wheel.
3. Install steering wheel retaining nut and torque to 30 ft. lbs.
4. Connect SIR coil electrical connector to inflator module, then install connector position assurance.
5. Position inflator module to steering wheel, then install new mounting screws, Fig. 23. Torque mounting screws to 87 inch lbs.
6. Ensure ignition switch is in Off position, then connect battery ground cable.
7. Connect yellow SIR two way electrical connector and connector position assurance at base of steering column.
8. Install Airbag fuse into fuse panel.
9. Install lower left hand trim panel.
10. Place ignition switch in Run position and note operation of ``Infl Rest'' warning lamp. Warning lamp should flash 7 to 9 times and then turn off.
