Extension Housing & Speed Sensor Gear

Removal
1. Remove gearshift assembly, refer to Gearshift Assembly.
2. Remove speed sensor for extension housing.
3. Remove extension housing attaching bolts, then extension housing. When removing extension housing at taching bolts note location of short bolts.
4. Remove selective shim, then depress speedometer drive gear clip and pull speed sensor drive gear from output shaft.
5. Remove speedometer drive gear clip and washer, then extension housing gasket.
Disassemble
1. Using a suitable tool remove roll pin from support ring, then remove support ring.
2. Remove extension housing rear oil seal. Then remove bushing using tool Nos. J 21456-16 and J 8092 or equivalents.
Inspection
Clean all metal parts in a suitable solvent. All seals and other rubber parts should be washed in a water soluble industrial cleaner that does not contain chlorinate hydrocarbons. Inspect all part for damage or wear.
Assemble
1. Install extension housing bushing using tool Nos. J 21456-1 and J 8092 or equivalents.
2. Heat extension housing to 176°F. Press support ring into extension housing being careful to align support ring groove.
3. Install roll pin, then extension housing seal.
4. If extension housing or support ring are being replaced proceed as follows:
a. Place transmission in a vertical position.
b. Measure from case to top of output shaft output bearing. Ensure bearing is seated into case. To measure to top of bearing old shim must first be removed.
c. Take rear extension housing and gasket, measure from top of support ring down to setting surface of rear extension housing gasket.
d. Subtract above two reading from each other, minus clearance needed to compress gasket, which is .002-.004 inch.
e. To select correct shim size refer to chart.
Installation
1. Install extension housing gasket and selective shim, then washer onto out-put shaft.
2. Install speed sensor drive gear clip, then speed sensor drive gear.
3. Install extension housing, then extension housing attaching bolts. Ensure short bolts are installed in same place as noted in removal procedure.
4. Torque extension housing bolts to 18 ft. lbs.
5. Install speed sensor, spacer, retainer, then attaching bolt. Torque attaching bolt to 89 inch lbs.
6. Install gearshift assembly as outlined in Gearshift Assembly.
