Rocker Arm Assembly: Service and Repair
This article has been updated with one of the following Bulletins 89-6-18, T-90-13, 90-53-6, 90-6-1.
The 2.8L engines have intake and exhaust push rods with different lengths. To distinguish the different length push rods they have been identified with paint. The paint markings may be hard to recognize after prolonged use, but the push rods may be identified by their different lengths. The intake push rods are marked with orange paint and are 6 inches long, The exhaust push rods are marked with blue paint and are 6 3/8 inches long.
VALVE MECHANISM
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Rocker arm covers.
2. Rocker arm nuts.
^ Keep components in a rack so they may be reinstalled in the same location
3. Rocker arm pivot ball(s).
4. Rocker arm(s).
5. Push rods (Intake and exhaust push rods are different lengths; intake push rods are marked orange, exhaust push rods are marked blue).
INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Push rods (Install correct length push rods).
^ Intake push rods are marked orange.
^ Exhaust push rods are marked blue.
^ Make sure push rods seat in lifter.
2. Rocker arm(s).
3. Rocker arm pivot ball(s).
IMPORTANT: Coat bearing surfaces of rocker arms and pivot balls with "Molykote" or equivalent.
4. Rocker arm nuts.
TIGHTEN
^ Nuts to 24 Nm (18 ft. lb.)
6. Rocker arm covers.
