Steering Column - Removal and Installation

Removal

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove nut and bolt from upper intermediate shaft coupling, then separate coupling from lower end of steering column.
3. Disconnect shift linkage from lower shift lever.
4. Remove left sound insulator and lower column cover.
5. Remove cover and seal mounting screws.
6. Remove shift indicator clip from shift bowl, if equipped with column shift.
7. Remove the nuts from the column upper support and lower column.
8. Disconnect wiring from column, then remove column from vehicle.

Installation

1. Install steering column in vehicle, Fig. 18. and connect wiring.
2. Connect column to upper column support and finger tighten nuts.
3. Install cover and seal to dash panel and torque screws to 53 lb in
4. Connect intermediate shaft to column shaft, install nut and bolt and torque to 52 lb ft
5. Install shift indicator clip to the shift bowl, if equipped with column shift.
6. Install left sound insulator and lower column cover.
7. Connect shift linkage to lower shift lever and connect battery ground cable.
