Front Axle Shaft Removal and Installation

Removal






Note: The hub bearing could be damaged if it is subjected to vehicle weight such as when moving the vehicle with the drive axle removed. Therefore, if it is absolutely necessary to place vehicle weight on the hub, first support the hub bearing as shown in image.






1. Remove cotter pin, hub nut cap, hub nut and washer.






2. While an assistant depresses the brake pedal, loosen six nuts holding drive axle to side gear shaft (differential side).






3. Remove brake caliper from knuckle and suspend with wire. Remove disc.
4. Remove arm to ball joint attaching bolts and nuts. Disconnect arm from ball joint.
5. Pull axle hub from drive axle. Remove drive axle from vehicle.
6. Inspect drive axle.
a. Check to see that there is no play in the outer C.V joint.
b. Check to see that the tri-pot joint slides smoothly in the thrust direction.
c. Check to see that there is no play in the radial direction of the tri-pot joint.
d. Check for damage to seals.

Installation

1. For installation of front drive axle, reverse axle removal procedure.
2. Torque all fasteners to specifications.
