Assembly
ASSEMBLY1. Apply a suitable lubricant to 0-rings, then assemble new 0-rings to piston.
2. Insert underdrive clutch piston into drum, using care not to damage 0-ring, then place return spring on clutch piston.
3. Place tool No.09350-32013 on spring retainer, then compress springs using a suitable press. Insert snap ring, ensuring end gap is not aligned with spring retainer claw.
4. Install plates, discs and flange in order as follows: plate, disc, plate, disc, plate, disc, flange (flat end down). Install snap ring.
5. Check piston stroke of underdrive clutch as follows:
a. Install underdrive clutch into transaxle case.
b. Apply compressed air to oil passage.
c. Using a suitable dial indicator, measure underdrive clutch piston stroke.
d. Piston stroke should be 0.0579-0.0744 inch.
6. If piston stroke is less than specified, components are improperly assembled. If piston stroke is more than specified, select a flange that will bring piston stroke within specifications. Flanges are available in thicknesses of 0.0803 or 0.0945 inch.
7. Assemble thrust washer to clutch drum, then install one-way clutch with claw of retainer upward.
8. Retain clutch drum, then rotate one-way clutch. One-way clutch should rotate freely counterclockwise and lock clockwise.
9. Install bearing outer races, pressing thick race, against flange side of drive pinion without flange. Using tool No. 09350-3213 and a suitable press, press thin race into opposite side.
10. Assemble bearing onto countershaft, using tool No. 09350-32013 and a suitable press.
11. Install ring gear and snap ring, then the new spacer and drive pinion with output flange.
12. Install second bearing onto - countershaft, using tool No. 09350-32013 and a suitable press. Ensure a slight clearance between output flange and bearing.
13. Install bearing inner race, using tool No. 09350-32013 and a suitable press. Ensure a slight clearance is present. 14. Install locknut, then adjust countershaft preload as follows:
a. Temporarily install counter driven gear, using a suitable press.
b. Assemble tool No. 09350-32013 to driven gear, then secure countershaft in a suitable soft jawed vise.
c. Torque new locknut, using tool No. 09350-32013, to 130-159 ft. lbs.
d. Snug down bearing by rotating countershaft.
e. Using tool No.09350-32013 and a suitable spring tension gauge, measure starting torque of countershaft.
f. Torque should be 1.6 - 4.4 lbs. with tension-gauge or 5.2-8.7 inch lbs. using a torque gauge.
g. If torque is exceeded, replace spacer and retorque.
15. Apply a suitable lubricant to race and bearing, then install.
16. Install Underdrive planetary gear, then the snap ring,
17. Apply a suitable lubricant to thrust bearing, then assemble thrust bearing to counter driven gear.
