Differential Side Bearing Preload Adjust
1. Place outer race and adjusting shim onto RH bearing, then place differential case into transaxle case.
2. Install LH bearing retainer, less O-ring seal, then temporarily tighten attaching bolts alternately and evenly while rotating ring gear.
3. Install RH side bearing cap, then tighten attaching bolts alternately and evenly while turning ring gear.
4. Torque LH bearing retainer to 14 ft lbs.
5. Measure preload of side bearing using tool No. J-35405 and a suitable torque wrench. Preload should be 8.7-13.9 inch lbs. on a new bearing or 4.3-6.9 inch lbs. on a used bearing.
6. If preload is not as specified, remove differential from case and select a suitable shim from chart, see image, to bring preload within specifications. Each shim will change preload approximately 2.6 - 3.5 inch lbs.
7. Remove differential case and component arts, then if preload is within specifications, remove bearing retainer, differential case, RH side bearing and shim.
