Steering Column - Removal and Installation
CHEVROLET REAR WHEEL DRIVE EXC. CHEVETTE
REMOVAL
Except. 1984---87 Corvette
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove nut and bolt from upper intermediate shaft coupling, then separate coupling from lower end of steering column.
3. Disconnect shift linkage from lower shift lever.
4. Remove left lower instrument panel trim and/or lap cooler duct, then disconnect all electrical wire connectors from steering column.
5. Remove screws attaching toe plate to dash panel.
6. Remove nuts attaching steering column bracket to instrument panel.
7. Disconnect shift position indicator cable, if equipped with automatic transmission, then withdraw steering column from vehicle.
CHEVROLET NOVA
Removal
1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then remove steering wheel.
2. Remove instrument cluster lower finish panel, air duct and lower steering column cover.
3. Disconnect ignition switch and and turn signal wiring connectors.
4. Remove hole cover clamp screw, then remove pinch bolt from yoke.
5. Remove yoke from steering gear.
6. Remove lower column mounting bracket bolts.
7. Remove upper steering column to instrument panel attaching bolts.
8. Remove column assembly from vehicle.
Installation
1. Position column assembly under instrument panel and install upper and lower column bracket bolts hand tight.
2. Ensure that column is properly aligned and torque mounting bolts to 19 lb ft
3. Install intermediate shaft yoke joint and torque retaining bolts to 26 lb ft
4. Reverse remaining procedure to complete installation.
