Engine: Service and Repair


16 VALVE ENGINE
1. Disconnect battery ground and positive cables, then remove battery and engine compartment hood.
2. Remove right and left side engine under covers.
3. Drain engine oil into suitable container.
4. Drain coolant from radiator and engine block into suitable container.
5. On models equipped with man. trans., drain transaxle fluid into suitable container.
6. Remove air cleaner assembly and coolant reservoir tank.
7. Remove radiator and coolant fan as an assembly.
8. Disconnect heater hoses from coolant inlet housing.
9. Disconnect fuel pressure hose from fuel filter, then the heater and air hoses from air valve.
10. Disconnect fuel return hose from fuel pressure regulator.
11. On models equipped with man. trans., remove clutch slave cylinder without disconnecting hydraulic line and position aside.
12. On all models, disconnect vacuum hose from charcoal canister.
13. Disconnect transaxle shift control cables from transaxle.
14. Disconnect speedometer cable, then the cruise control cable (if equipped), accelerator cable and accelerator link.
15. On models equipped with cruise control, remove cruise control actuator.
16. On all models, disconnect ignition coil wiring, then remove coil.
17. Remove righthand side interior cowl panel, then disconnect No. 4 junction block connectors.
18. Remove Electronic Control Unit (ECU) cover, then disconnect ECU connectors.
19. Pull engine main wire harness into engine compartment, then disconnect the following:
a. No. 2 junction block connectors (located in engine compartment).
b. Starter cable from battery positive.
c. Ground strap terminals.
d. Washer change valve connector.
e. Cruise control vacuum pump and vacuum switch connectors (if equipped).
f. Solenoid resistor connector.
20. Disconnect brake booster hose from intake manifold.
21. Remove A/C compressor and power steering pump (if equipped) with lines attached and position aside.
22. Disconnect oxygen sensor electrical connector, then remove oxygen sensor.
23. Disconnect oil cooler hoses from oil cooler.
24. Raise and support vehicle, then disconnect catalytic converter clamp, engine pipe clamp and engine pipe from exhaust manifold.
25. Disconnect front and rear engine mounts-to-center member attaching bolts, then remove front mount through bolt and mount.
26. Remove center member-to-frame attaching bolts, then the center member.
27. Remove axle-to-side gear shaft attaching bolts, then disconnect right side lower arm from steering knuckle and separate. Remove axle shafts from side gear shafts and position aside with suitable wire.
28. Lower vehicle to ground level.
29. Attach suitable lifting equipment to engine/transaxle assembly, then remove right and left side mounts.
30. Carefully lift engine/transaxle assembly from vehicle and place on suitable stand.
31. Remove radiator fan temperature switch connector and cold start injector time switch connector.
32. Disconnect vacuum hoses from Bi-Metal Vacuum Switching Valves (BVSV), then remove coolant inlet housing attaching bolts and nut.
33. Disconnect hoses from coolant bypass tubes, then remove coolant inlet housing.
34. Disconnect back-up lamp switch connector, water temperature sensor connector and water temperature switch connector.
35. On models equipped with auto. trans., neutral start switch connectors and transaxle solenoid connector.
36. On models equipped with auto. trans., rotate crankshaft as necessary to gain access to and remove six torque converter attaching bolts.
37. Remove starter assembly, then separate transaxle from engine.
38. Reverse procedure to install.
