Note: This procedure covers the manual transmission portion of the Corvette manual transmission/automatic overdrive unit. Refer to "Automatic Overdrive" for service of the automatic overdrive unit

1. Remove overdrive unit to reverse housing attaching bolts, then separate the two units.

2. Remove drain plug from lower right side of case and drain lubricant from transmission.

3. Shift transmission into second gear. Remove shift cover attaching bolts, cover, 9asket and both shift forks from transmission.

4. Remove backup switch from reverse housing.

5. Rotate reverse shifter shaft and remove shift fork and gear from
mainshaft.

6. Remove lock pin from reverse shift lever boss and pull shaft from housing.

7. Remove drive gear retainer bolts, retainer and gasket from front of transmission.

8. Remove front bearing snap ring, selective fit snap ring and spacer washer.

9. Pull drive gear bearing from transmission with a suitable puller.

10. Remove reverse housing to case attaching bolts. Using a suitable drift and hammer, tap locating pin for reverse housing into case.

11. Rotate reverse housing on mainshaft until hole for reverse idler gear shaft aligns with countergear shaft.

12. Using a dummy shaft, drive countergear shaft rearward and through reverse housing. The countergear will drop to bottom of case to provide clearance for mainshaft removal.

13. Remove mainshaft with reverse housing and drive gear from transmission case.

14. Remove front reverse idler gear and thrust washer from case.

15. Remove countergear and two tanged thrust washers from transmission case. Check bottom of case for loose pilot bearings. Remove locating pin for reverse housing and any other loose components.
