Overdrive Unit Replace

Transmission and overdrive unit are removed as an assembly.

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.

2. Remove air cleaner assembly from engine.

3. Disconnect T.V. cable from left TBI unit, if applicable.

4. Remove distributor cap and position aside.

5. Raise and support vehicle, then on models equipped with convertible to remove upper and lower underbody braces.

6. Remove exhaust system as an assembly as follows:

a. Disconnect AIR pipe from catalytic converter.

b. Disconnect AIR pipe clamps from exhaust pipe.

c. Disconnect oxygen sensor lead.

d. Remove muffler to support hanger attaching bolts.

e. Disconnect exhaust pipes from exhaust manifolds and remove exhaust system.

7. Remove exhaust hanger at transmission, then position a suitable jack under transmission.

8. Remove bolts attaching driveline beam at axle and transmission.

9. Remove driveline beam from vehicle.

10. Mark relationship of the propeller shaft to the axle companion flange. Remove trunnion bearing straps, then disconnect rear universal joint from axle. Slide propeller shaft slip yoke out from the overdrive unit and remove shaft from the vehicle.

11. Disconnect fluid cooler lines from overdrive unit

12. Disconnect T.V. cable from overdrive unit, if applicable.

13. Disconnect shift linkage from shift cover.

14. Disconnect electrical connector from side cover switches, back-up light switch and overdrive unit. Disconnect speedometer cable.

15. Place a suitable jack under engine oil pan with a block of wood placed between jack and pan.

16. Lower transmission slightly.

17. Remove transmission to bellhousing attaching bolts.

18. Slide transmission and overdrive unit rearward to disengage input shaft from clutch.

19. Lower transmission and overdrive unit from vehicle.

20. Remove (7) transmission to overdrive unit attaching bolts and separate overdrive unit from transmission.

21. Reverse procedure to install.
