Model and Year: 1987-88 CAVALIER, CORSICA, BERETTA
MODELS WITH 2.8L (VIN CODE W) ENGINE
TO: ALL CHEVROLET DEALERS


Some customers driving 1987-88 models listed above equipped with a 2.8L engine (VIN Code W), may comment on the following:

1). Low coolant light flashing during acceleration.

2). Temperature gauge needle pointing toward hot range.

3). Coolant not flowing from the reservoir bottle to the
radiator.

These comments may be the result of air trapped in the coolant system preventing proper system fill and/or a damaged seal surface for the coolant filler cap assembly.

If customer comments are received regarding the coolant system, the following service inspections and repair procedures should be performed.

^ Inspect coolant system for proper fill level.

^ Inspect radiator neck for damage to the cap sealing surfaces.

^ Verify filler cap function by removing the coolant recovery hose at the filler assembly and applying a vacuum to the recovery hose fitting.

NOTICE: A FUNCTIONING CAP WILL HOLD A VACUUM OF 15 TO 25 INCHES-MERCURY FOR SEVERAL MINUTES.
^ Repair/replace the coolant filler assembly or filler cap assembly as required.

^ Fill and pressure check the coolant system. Check the coolant recovery hose and connections for coolant leaks. Repair as required.

^ Run engine until normal operating temperature is obtained and then let cool to ambient temperature. Recheck the coolant fill level, topping off as required both the radiator and recovery tank. A second complete thermocycle is recommended to ensure all air has been purged from the system.
