Steering Column - Removal and Installation


CHEVROLET REAR WHEEL DRIVE EXC. CHEVETTE
REMOVAL
Except. 1984---87 Corvette
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove nut and bolt from upper intermediate shaft coupling, then separate coupling from lower end of steering column.
3. Disconnect shift linkage from lower shift lever.
4. Remove left lower instrument panel trim and/or lap cooler duct, then disconnect all electrical wire connectors from steering column.
5. Remove screws attaching toe plate to dash panel.
6. Remove nuts attaching steering column bracket to instrument panel.
7. Disconnect shift position indicator cable, if equipped with automatic transmission, then withdraw steering column from vehicle.

Removal
1. Disconnect battery ground cable and remove left instrument panel sound insulator.
2. Push seal assembly down toward flexible coupling and remove coupling pinch bolt, Fig. 13.
3. Remove lower steering column retaining bolt and 2 capsule retaining bolts, and lower column.
4. Disconnect electrical connectors, then remove steering column assembly.Installation
1. Insert steering shaft into flexible coupling and loosely install 3 column retaining bolts.
2. Center steering shaft within column by moving column up and down or side to side as needed, then torque lower mounting bolt to 20 lb ft
3. Torque upper mounting bolts to 20 lb ft, then install coupling pinch bolt and torque to 30 lb ft
4. Connect electrical connectors to column.
5. Turn steering wheel from lock to lock, ensuring that shaft is centered, and readjust position of column as needed.
6. Pull seal assembly up over column bushing and reverse remaining procedure to complete installation.
