In-Vehicle Testing - Delcotron Type CS Charging System
TEST DESCRIPTION:1. Visually check belt and wiring and make necessary repairs.
2. Ensure battery is fully charged.
3. Run engine at 1000-1500 RPM for 30 seconds, then measure alternator output voltage.
4. If voltage is less than 16.0 volts, proceed to step 5. If voltage is 16.0 volts or more, proceed as follows:
a. Disassemble and inspect individual components. If rotor does not pass ohmmeter inspection, replace drive end frame and regulator. If rotor does pass ohmmeter inspection, replace regulator.
5. With ignition "OFF" and battery ground cable disconnected, connect an ammeter in the circuit at the battery terminal of the alternator.
6. Reconnect battery ground cable, connect a carbon pile across the battery.
7. Run engine at 1500 RPM, then adjust carbon pile to obtain maximum current output from alternator.
8. If alternator output is less than 90 amps, proceed as follows:
a. Disassemble and test, then reassemble.
9. If alternator output is greater than 90 amps, proceed as follows:
a. Run engine and measure the voltage drop between the alternator housing and the battery ground terminal.
b. If less than 0.2 volts, alternator is satisfactory.
c. If more than 0.2 volts, check for poor ground or high resistance in ground circuit.
