Fuel Tank Replacement
Fuel Tank Insulators And Tank Mounting:
Fuel Level Sender Installation:
CAUTION: To help avoid personal injury when a vehicle is on a hoist, provide additional support for the vehicle on the opposite end from which components are being removed. This will reduce the possibility of the vehicle falling off the hoist.
1. Remove filler cap and drain fuel tank.
2. Raise vehicle on a hoist.
3. Disconnect exhaust pipe at converter and rear hanger. Allow exhaust system to hang over axle assembly.
4. Remove tailpipe heat shield and muffler heat shield.
5. Remove fuel filter neck shield behind left rear tire.
6. Remove rear suspension track bar.
7. Remove rear suspension track bar brace.
8. Disconnect fuel pump/gage connector.
NOTICE: The wiring harness on the fuel pump/gage sending assembly is a permanent, integral part of the sending assembly. Do not pry up on cover connector. Disconnect at body harness connector.
9. Disconnect all fuel pipes.
10. Remove fuel pipe retaining bracket on left side and remove brake line clip from bracket.
11. Position support jack under axle assembly.
12. Disconnect lower ends of shock absorbers. Disconnect rear stabilizer bar from frame if equipped.
13. Lower axle assembly and remove both coil springs.
14. Remove tank strap bolts.
15. remove tank by rotating front of tank down and sliding to the right side. rear suspension must be lowered as far as possible without causing damage to the brake lines and cables.
16. Remove fuel pump/gage from tank.
Installation
1. Reverse removal procedure.
2. Always replace O-ring when tank unit has been removed.
3. When reinstalling the fuel tank be sure to reinstall anti-squeak pieces on top of the tank to reduce rattles and other annoying noises.
4. Tighten fuel tank retaining strap bolts or screws.
