Output Shaft
Description:
DISASSEMBLY
1. Remove speedometer gear retainer clip and gear.
2. Remove pump cover attaching screws, then the cover.
3. On 1985-88 models, remove oil seal from pump cover.
4. On all models, mark pump gears for assembly. Tilt pump housing downward, then rotate pump housing until gears slide out.
5. Remove drive pin from output shaft
6. Remove pump housing from output shaft, then the Teflon washer, if applicable, from pump housing.
7. Remove thrust washer from pump housing, then the thrust bearing and washer from clutch hub.
8. Remove clutch hub from output shaft.
9. Remove sprag clutch from output shaft.
ASSEMBLY
1. Coat all components before assembling with clean Dexron II automatic transmission fluid.
2. Install sprag clutch onto output shaft. Lip on sprag clutch cage must face rearward or toward the oil grooves on the clutch hub.
3. Install clutch hub onto output shaft Oil grooves on hub must face sprag clutch.
4. Install thrust washer and bearing onto clutch hub.
5. Insert new Teflon seal, if applicable, into pump housing, then install thrust washer onto housing. Retain thrust washer with petroleum jelly.
6. Install pump housing onto output shaft, then reinstall retaining pin in output shaft
7. Install pump gears into pump housin9. Gears must be installed in same direction as removed. Align marks placed on gears during disassembly.
8. On 1985-88 models, install oil seal in pump cover.
9. On all models, place pump cover onto pump housing. Align cover bolt holes, then install bolts. Torque bolts to 6-8 ft lbs.
10. Install speedometer gear and retaining clip into output shaft Ensure speedometer gear and retaining clip clear pump housing when shaft is turned.
11. Install new 0-rings into pump cover.
