Overdrive Disassembly

Description:






DISASSEMBLY
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.

2. Remove overdrive unit from vehicle.

3. Remove overdrive case filler plug and drain oil from case.

4. Remove retaining bolt and bracket assembly from speedometer sensor and driven gear, then remove sensor and gear.

5. Remove (3) 1/8 inch pipe plugs from rear of overdrive unit case.

6. Install (3) pressure plate retaining bolts part No. J-34681-A or equivalent into case. Turn bolts until bolt heads are flush with case surface. Turn bolts 2 additional turns by rotating each bolt one turn at a time. This sequence must be followed to prevent pressure plate damage.

7. Remove (4) Allen head bolts retaining adapter plate to overdrive case.

8. Using a plastic hammer, tap adapter plate and separate from overdrive case.

9. Position overdrive unit into a suitable working fixture, and remove large accumulator/piston snap ring. If pressure is felt at snap ring, tighten the three bolts installed in step 6 one additional turn.

WARNING: Failure to adequately tighten bolts may result in personal Injury.

10. Using a suitable Allen wrench, remove accumulator/piston assembly.

11. Remove carrier and bearing assembly.

12. Remove finger pressure plate.

13. Remove overdrive clutch pack composition and steel plates, then the clutch stop plate.

14. Remove direct clutch pack composition and steel plates, then the steel bearing plate.

15. Measure each selective clutch plate in the direct clutch set and record readings obtained. The selective clutch plates are used to control the clutch set clearance. When replacing the clutch plates, replace each selective plate with one of the same size.

16. Inspect overdrive and direct clutch plates as follows:

a. Inspect composition plates for pitting, flaking, wear, glazing, cracking and for chips or metal particles imbedded in lining. If composition plate shows any of these conditions, replace as required.

b. Inspect steel plates for discoloration. If plate surface is smooth and an even color smear is indicated, the plate can be reused. If Severe heat (hot) spot discoloration or surface scuffing is indicated, replace plate(s).

17. Remove thrust washer and bearing from output sun gear.

18. Rotate hub to gain access to the pump housing bolts, then remove pump housing attaching bolts.

19. Remove output shaft assembly.

20. Remove pressure plate and spring as follows:

a. Position tool J-21420-2 or equivalent onto pressure plate with bolt from tool No. J-23327 through center of plate.

b. Position tool No. J-23327 or equivalent onto rear of overdrive unit case and install retaining nut.

c. Remove (3) retaining bolts part No. J-34681-A from rear of case.

d. Loosen retaining nut on tool J-23327 bolt to relieve spring tension1 then remove pressure plate and springs from housing

21. Remove cooler valve attaching bolts, then the cooler valve.

22. Remove oil pan attaching bolts, then pry pan from case.

23. Remove oil filter and pickup tube from valve body.

24. Remove T.V. cable assembly from overdrive unit, if applicable.

25. Remove valve body attaching bolts, then the valve body and spacer plate from overdrive unit case.
