Steering - Click/Clunk Noise

Subject: "CLUNK" NOISE IN STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT
Model and Year: 1983-84 CELEBRITY AND CITATION
TO: ALL CHEVROLET DEALERS
This cancels and replaces Chevrolet Dealer Service Bulletin 84-183 dated August 1984, which should be destroyed. This issue includes the Labor operation number and labor time allowed to perform this operation.

A "click" or "clunk" felt in the steering wheel during vehicle stops and starts may be caused by intermediate shaft slip joint motion. To correct this condition:

FIGURE 1:

1. Remove intermediate shaft from car per chassis service manual instructions.

2. Remove all foreign matter from shaft by wiping with a shop cloth

3. Using chassis grease meeting requirements of GM-6031M (P/N 1051344), grease the exposed shaft. FILL SHAFT POCKET AT POINT X and the inside of the tube at point Y (see Figure 1).

4. Fully compress intermediate shaft assembly two (2) or three (3) times to work grease into the assembly. REPEAT Steps 3 and 4
three (3) times.

5. Reinstall intermediate shaft assembly in car.

NOTICE: When the intermediate shaft is reinstalled in the vehicle, care should be taken to assure the shaft boot seal is not dimpled or distorted (See Figure 2). A distorted boot which rubs the intermediate shaft assembly may cause a slight steering bind when the vehicle is first operated in very cold weather.
IF A NEW INTERMEDIATE SHAFT IS REPLACED FOR ANY REASON, LUBRICATE THE NEW SHAFT AT THE LOCATIONS ILLUSTRATED
