Rear Axle Shaft Seal and Rear Wheel Drive Shaft Flange Replacement

* J 24420-C - Harmonic Balancer Puller

Removal Procedure

1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle Service and Repair.

2. Remove the rear wheel drive shaft. Refer to Rear Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement Rear Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement.




3. Using the J 24420-C - harmonic balancer puller and the J 2619-01 - slide hammer, remove the rear drive axle flange.




4. Using a flat-bladed screwdriver, remove the drive axle flange axle seal (1) from the differential side cover (2).

Installation Procedure

1. Apply a small amount of clean 75W-90 synthetic gear lube, GM P/N 12378261 (Canadian P/N 10953455) to the sealing lips of the seal.




2. Using the J 21426 - seal installer (1) and a hammer, install the drive axle flange seal (2) in the differential side cover (3).




3. Using the appropriate tool, install the wheel drive flange in the rear differential.

4. Install the rear wheel drive shaft. Refer to Rear Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement Rear Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement.

5. Inspect the fluid level of the rear drive axle. Refer to Rear Axle Lubricant Level Inspection Rear Drive Axle.

6. Remove the support and lower the vehicle.
